Hamburg’s airport lies 8.km north-west of the city, and is linked to the S– and U–Bahn (suburban and underground) station of Ohlsdorf by a public express bus that departs every 10 minutes. There is also a more expensive, private bus connection to the main Hauptbahnhof station, which lies at the eastern edge of the city centre.
Public transport around the city is quick and efficient by the integrated network of buses and S– and U–Bahn trains run by HVV. A day ticket costs €5.25 and can be used by one adult accompanied by up to three children under 14; the group version of this, covering five people of any age, is only valid after 09.00 and priced at €7.40. However, it’s usually much better value to buy a Hamburg Card, which also gives free entry to the municipally owned museums (or reduced entry to their special exhibitions) and a substantial reduction on a number of other attractions, including lake and harbour cruises. Current prices are €7 for a day ticket (which can be used from 18.00 the day before) and €14.50 for a 3 day ticket (valid from the first day until midnight on the last). Tickets for families – or for up to five people travelling together – cost €13 for one day, €23 for 3 days.
